Dear Reader,
Mid-January is entirely dreadful as a concept. I’ve found myself in many a reading slump at this time of year. The trees are bare, the arrival of spring feels impossibly far away, and the new year has lost a bit of its luster. Plus, the dreaded Vitamin D deficiency has arrived and challenged us to fisticuffs in an Arby’s parking lot. For those of you who set reading goals at the new year, this might be the point when your goal begins to feel daunting.
But there’s nothing better than the cozy wintertime experience of being snuggled in bed on a Sunday afternoon with an enthralling book. Maybe it’s beginning to snow. Maybe there’s a small creature curled up next to you. Maybe you have a hot cup of cocoa waiting on your bedside table. There’s nothing on your mind but your book—you’re unable to put it down. This is the best season for readers!
Today, I’d like to share my process for escaping a reading slump. This isn’t The One Incontrovertible Reading System; these are just a few practices I’ve found helpful in my own life (through much trial and error). Please take only the parts that resonate for you and leave the rest! I hope you enjoy this letter and I hope you tell me your favorite tools, too. Okay, here we go.
